Adjacent to Sunset Beach is the undeveloped barrier island of Bird Island. The island made Yahoo!’s Top 10 List of the World’s Most Unusual Beaches.

In 1981, when land-development proposals began to surface that threatened to negatively affect the future of Bird Island, a local resident planted a black mailbox, with a notebook and pencil inside, in this spot as a plea to help save the 1,300-acre barrier island. The handwritten letters found in the notebook helped to secure Bird Island’s state reserve by 2002. Even after securing the preservation status, letters continued to be written, along with wishes, dreams and words of encouragement. The mailbox has been fondly named the Kindred Spirit Mailbox and is still visited by tourists on a regular basis.

The shoreline, dunes, and marshland of Bird Island provide important habitat and nesting for species that are endangered, threatened, or of special concern, including the Kemp's Ridley and Loggerhead sea turtles, and seabeach amaranth (Amaranthus pumilus), a plant of the foredune area. The island encompasses 1,481 acres consisting of approximately 135 upland acres and over 1,300 acres of marsh, intertidal flats, and subtidal area.
